These works sprang from the impulse to apply gel medium with a palette knife to random areas of the page. Creating texture and an organizing principle for the piece. It was like staking tent poles. I did this on several pieces of paper pinned on the walls of my studio until I had enough. With the side of my black oil pastel, I drew two parallel lines in the same place on each paper. This second compelling impulse and organizing principle set these works in motion. As I worked these pieces seemed to tell a story. A story of people leaving their land, leaving their homes. The images reminded me of a time ravaged architecture, ruins of a former civilization.
